STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Curious stargazers and seasoned amateur astronomers alike are invited to take in the stellar views at Tarleton State University’s Star Party Friday, Nov. 6, at the Tarleton Astronomical Observatory, located at Hunewell Ranch 8 miles northeast of Stephenville.
Hosted by the College of Science and Mathematics and facilitated by Society of Physics Students (SPS) members, the star party will offer a chance to view the night sky through the physics/astronomy program’s 32-inch research-grade telescope as well as several smaller but powerful telescopes set up outside the observatory pointed at different celestial objects.
Amateur astronomers and astronomy educators are welcome to set up their own personal telescopes on concrete slabs outside the observatory and share the enthusiasm with others. Guests are encouraged to approach telescope operators and ask questions.
Gates to the Tarleton State Astronomical Observatory will open at 5 p.m. SPS students will greet guests at the gate and request that they turn off their headlights off and drive slowly to the observatory building using their parking lights (amber lights) as a courtesy to those already at the site looking through the telescopes. Warm clothing and outdoor footwear are recommended. No overnight camping is permitted.
The observatory at Hunewell Ranch is located at 5090 County Road 182, Stephenville.
