STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University professor Dr. Marcy Tanter has been selected a Fulbright Scholar to South Korea, where she’ll teach the works of Emily Dickinson and other American women poets at Dongguk University in 2018.
“I don’t remember how I reacted when I received the news,” wrote Tanter in an email from a current study abroad trip to South Korea. “I do know I forwarded the email to my dean and department head right away. Of course, I was—and am—excited.”
Tanter earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, where she wrote her dissertation on Dickinson and 19th century British poetry. Since joining Tarleton’s English faculty in 1998, she has expanded her studies to include African American literature and culture as well as South Korean poetry in translation.
A pioneer of Tarleton’s study abroad presence in South Korea, Tanter has developed academic relationships with Dongguk University and Chonnam National University in Gwangju. She is Tarleton’s first Fulbright Scholar to South Korea.
The highly coveted Fulbright Program grants are issued by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to foster international academic exchange. Theprogram operates in 160 nations, and more than 360,000 people have participated in the program since its inception in 1946, including 54 Nobel and 82 Pulitzer Prize winners
