Annual Tarleton Halloween Rodeo

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Rustle up your favorite costume for the annual Halloween Rodeo hosted by Tarleton State University’s Rodeo Program on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Lone Star Arena.
The fast-paced action, featuring costumed contestants atop rough stock and horses donning Halloween-themed attire, kicks off at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 or free for students with a valid Tarleton ID. Proceeds benefit Tarleton Rodeo Team scholarships.
In addition to the usual rodeo events — bareback riding, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, goat tying, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding and a ladies’ steer riding — the Halloween competition includes a costume contest for contestants. Organizers will designate $10 from each rodeo contestant’s entry fee to award a cash prizes for the costume contest.
Following the competitors’ costume contest, a 12-and-under calf scramble and separate costume contest for kids will be held.
Fees to compete in the rodeo are $100 for all events except the ladies’ steer riding, which is $50. All entries must be paid with cash in-full. Pre-entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29. There are no limits on entries for the timed events; however, there is a 10-entry limit on rough stock. Slack will run if needed.
Former Tarleton rodeo coach Bob Doty is credited for starting the annual event along with members of his former men’s and women’s teams. Fans are guaranteed great entertainment as the costumed contestants break from their usual western attire and get into the Halloween spirit by donning everything from masks and face paint to full-length ghoulish garb.
