STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Back-to-school weekend kicks off this Friday at Tarleton State University, when some 1,900 freshmen move into their home-away-from-home on the Stephenville campus.

Tarleton’s Move-In Experience begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, with the last reporting time for the Class of 2021 beginning at noon Saturday, Aug. 19. Expect cars and trucks full of everything from pillows and printers to table lamps and towels. Stores and restaurants will be busy.

Local residents should expect heavy traffic on Frey, Washington, North Lillian and McIlhaney streets as well as Harbin Drive and Ollie Avenue throughout the weekend.

McIlhaney Street, between Washington and Vanderbilt streets, will be closed to the public from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. West Sloan Street, between Harbin Drive and Rome Street, will be closed from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers will keep traffic moving along streets adjacent to the university and direct students to staging areas or residence halls. To help minimize traffic congestion, all freshmen have received a Move-In Guide with specific reporting times and locations.

“Our goal is to make the Move-In Experience as easy and hassle-free as possible for students, their parents and Stephenville residents,” said Robert Nimmo, executive director of Student Health and Wellness and Move-In organizer. “Some 2,000 volunteers from more than 40 groups and student organizations will put in long hours this weekend to ensure that Move-In is as smooth as possible. We appreciate the patience and understanding of Stephenville residents as students experience campus life and the surrounding community for the first time.”

New residents to Heritage, Legends, Legacy, Centennial, Honors and Traditions halls will report to the west side of Memorial Stadium off North Harbin Drive. Hunewell and Hunewell Annex residents will report to the corner of Ollie Avenue and Vanderbilt Street.

Volunteers will help unload vehicles and carry student belongings into residence halls.

Tarleton parking lots P3, P9 and P15 will serve as temporary overflow Friday and Saturday for family vehicles. The university lot adjacent to Chamberlin Elementary School will handle overflow on Friday after 4:30 p.m. and Saturday.
