Tarleton To Waive ACT, SAT Scores for Freshman Admission

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, July 6, 2020

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University today announced that it will not require submission of ACT or SAT scores for freshman applicants for spring, summer and fall 2021.

Dr. Javier Garza, Vice President for Enrollment Management, said the university is monitoring the impact of COVID-19 on students as they prepare to apply to colleges.

“There is an uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and questionable availability of ACT and SAT administrations in the months to come,” he said. “We see this as an important opportunity for Tarleton to provide some stability and to support prospective students as they navigate the path to college in the months ahead.”

He said the action was taken in the spirit of supporting students and in being fair and equitable in admissions decisions. Students will still be encouraged to submit their test scores, as they could favorably impact college-readiness status (Texas Success Initiative) and scholarships.

Tarleton reviews its admissions standards annually and its application processes on an ongoing basis.

“Compromised access to testing over the past few months has accelerated the national conversation around the use of test scores in college admissions,” Garza said. “Though we’re confident that our admission evaluation will continue to serve as a reliable means to assess the likelihood of student success at Tarleton, we also will continue to explore every opportunity to optimize and balance college access with student success.”
