Tarleton Texan football invited to inaugural Corsicana Bowl

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, November 13, 2017

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University Head Coach Todd Whitten and Tony Taulton announced at a press conference this morning that the Texans will take the field one more time in 2017 as a competing member of the first-ever Corsicana Bowl.

Taulton is founder and executive director of the bowl.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved with the Corsicana Bowl,” Whitten said. “We are very thankful and extremely honored as a football program to have this great opportunity. I’m very proud of our football team. These young men have worked hard all year to have the opportunity to play in a bowl game.”

Tarleton (6-5, 4-4 LSC) will meet up with former rival Central Oklahoma (7-4, 7-4 MIAA) at noon Saturday, Dec. 2, at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana—home of the Corsicana High School Tigers and the Navarro College Bulldogs. The stadium holds 10,000 spectators and opened in 2006.

Tarleton has won six games in the second season of Whitten’s return and is averaging 29.8 points per game while allowing 26.82. Meanwhile, Central Oklahoma is 7-4 on the season with all its games counting toward the MIAA standings. The Bronchos are coached by Nick Bobeck and have won five-straight games to end the regular season.

This is the fifth bowl invitation that Tarleton has received in school history and the first since 2013, when the Texans were invited to play in the Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove, Texas, against Ouachita Baptist. Icy conditions caused that game to be cancelled. The last time Tarleton took the field in a postseason bowl game was the 1986 Sunflower Bowl in Winfield, Kan., and the Texans defeated Benedictine 40-38.

Proceeds from the upcoming college bowl game benefit Special Olympics of Navarro County. Funds from the contest will aid the Special Olympics team with equipment and travel expenses

Tickets to the Corsicana Bowl game are available for purchase online at CorsicanaBowl.com and will be available at the gate on game day.
