STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University senior Kaylie Hart earned third place last weekend in an application development competition sponsored by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) during the second annual U.S. Information Technology Collegiate Conference held in Galveston.

Hart, a computer information systems major within the College of Business Administration, opted to compete as an individual in the application development event that usually consists of teams of two to four students.

“Placing at a national event in competition with such distinguished schools as Purdue, Iowa and the University of Houston is a major accomplishment,” said Art Dearing, assistant professor of computer information systems. “The fact that she did it solo is nothing short of extraordinary. Our sincere congratulations go out to Kaylie and the whole AITP team.”

Tarleton was represented by 10 students from its AITP chapter, attending the national competition that included opportunities for training, certification testing and networking with students from across the U.S. The entourage competed in software development, business analytics, network design, systems analysis and design, PC troubleshooting and security.

Senior CIS majors Herbert Gomez and Dominic Aurelio ousted more than 100 students to advance to the second round of the national security contest and are among the top 25 finalists invited to a second contest that challenged their abilities to attack networks and patch security holes. Unfortunately, when competing against this more select group of students, they did not finish in the top 10 who were officially recognized.

Tarleton’s students have been preparing for this competition since last August, with several competing at the regional ITCC competition in Amarillo in October 2018, helping them to prepare for the national event in Galveston. Serving as advisors to the AITP team are Dearing and Dr. Del Nagy.

Those attending last weekend’s competition are seniors Herbert Gomez, Dominic Aurelio, Joshua Sullivan, Harshit Taneja, Anthony Sandoval, Blessing Inyang, Larry Bates and Kaylie Hart; junior Daniel Hoffman; and sophomore Faith Thurman.
