STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Thanks to a $2.1 million Upward Bound grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Tarleton State University will continue to assist 95 potential first-generation college students from high schools in Stephenville, Comanche, De Leon, Dublin, Huckabay, Iredell, Gustine and Lingleville.
Upward Bound projects provide tutoring, academic counseling, cultural enrichment, financial guidance and other services to help students complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college or other institutions of higher learning.
“This is a win-win for Tarleton and the many students who will greatly benefit from the college preparatory services provided by Upward Bound,” said Jenny Watts, director of Tarleton’s program. “An active Tarleton program for 33 years, Upward Bound has helped hundreds of area high school students gain the necessary skills and motivation to pursue a post-secondary education.”
Upward Bound participants attend meetings two Saturdays each month on the Stephenville campus from September through May, and a five-week summer residential program (called Summer Bridge) provides opportunities for students to experience learning in a university environment.
In addition to required program services, Tarleton’s Upward Bound offers mentoring and a comprehensive academic support plan to help participants succeed in dual enrollment programs.
