SWECJMC Names New Vice President

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Dr. Liza P. Benedict, assistant professor of communication studies at Tarleton State University, has been named vice president for the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication (SWECJMC).
Benedict will oversee the organization’s research paper competition held in conjunction with its annual fall conference—set October 6 and 7 this year at Arizona State University. Following her one-year appointment, she’ll continue as SWECJMC president.
Benedict began her career as a reporter at a central Massachusetts news station with a viewing audience of more than 400,000. The award-winning stories she covered included two presidential visits and a tragic warehouse fire that killed six firefighters and made international news. Benedict moved into corporate public relations before switching to academia where she led marketing and communication departments, overseeing areas such as media management, creative services and community relations.
As a relatively new professor, Benedict looks forward to meeting other faculty in her field.
“SWECJMC is such a great opportunity to network with fellow academicians who have conducted notable research and who advocate critical thinking skills that are so vital to this division,” she said.
SWECJMC promotes the recognition, welfare and progress of journalism and mass communication education in the southwest United States. Members include dues-paying journalism and mass communication programs in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming that offer a bachelor’s degree.
SWECJMC is an affiliate of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
