STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Beginning with the 2020-21 school year, Tarleton State University will provide annual scholarships and guarantee admission to Paradise High School seniors who graduate in the top 25 percent of their class.

The Paradise Independent School District and Tarleton leaders finalized the agreement with a memorandum signed at the Feb. 13 meeting of the ISD’s board of trustees.

As part of the program, called the Distinguished High School Partnership, Tarleton will waive ACT (American College Test) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) requirements for students in the top quarter of their class and application fees for students who qualify.

“This collaboration aligns with our mission to be a first-choice institution for regional high school seniors,” said Tarleton President James L. Hurley. “Paradise graduates are destined to be leaders, and we have a social and economic responsibility to invest in their well-being.”

Tarleton is developing similar agreements with other school districts in the region.

“We are excited about this partnership with Tarleton State University,” said Dr. Paul Uttley, superintendent of the Paradise ISD. “It will remove barriers and give our students greater opportunities to pursue the kind of higher education that will improve their lives.

“A dozen of our staff, including myself and high school principal Mark Mathis, are Tarleton graduates. It makes us Texan proud to see our alma mater giving to our community and making Tarleton a viable option for Paradise Panthers.”

The President’s Guaranteed Award Program (GAP) assures first-time-in-college students graduating in the top quarter of their high school class between $1,000 and $4,000 in scholarship funds. Students graduating from one of Tarleton’s Distinguished High School Partners, now including Paradise High School, will receive an additional $500 or $1,000 in the guaranteed award level. Admitted freshmen must submit a general scholarship application to determine eligibility.
