Tarleton partners with Cleburne to guarantee admission for top graduates

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Cleburne Independent School District seniors could find it easier to obtain a college education after Tarleton State University and CISD trustees signed an agreement to benefit the school’s top graduates.

The Cleburne ISD Board of Trustees and Tarleton leaders recently finalized a memorandum of understanding offering annual scholarships and guaranteed admission for the top 25 percent of Cleburne High School graduates beginning with the 2020-21 academic year.

As part of the agreement, called the Distinguished High School Partnership, Tarleton will also waive ACT (American College Test) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) requirements for students in the top quarter of their class and application fees for students who qualify.

“Cleburne graduates are destined to be leaders, and we have a social and economic responsibility to invest in their future,” said Tarleton President James Hurley. “This partnership aligns with our mission to be a first-choice institution for regional high school seniors.”

Tarleton is developing similar agreements with other school districts in the region.

“Cleburne ISD has been presented with a unique opportunity to join in this partnership with Tarleton State University,” said Dr. Chris Jackson, assistant superintendent of research, data and school improvement. “Tarleton has consistently been the top choice of four-year colleges among Cleburne High School graduates. This will be of great financial help to our college-bound students — and their parents — while giving them the chance to receive a top-flight education at a university close to home. This will also be a great determining factor for students who are considering college.”

The Guaranteed Award Program (GAP) assures first-time-in-college students graduating in the top quarter of their high school class between $1,000 and $4,000 in scholarships. Students graduating from one of Tarleton’s Distinguished High School Partners will receive an additional $500 or $1,000. Admitted freshmen must submit a general scholarship application to determine eligibility.
