Latin Groove Pays Tribute to The Queen of Soul

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — A tribute to Aretha Franklin will highlight a concert by the Tarleton State University salsa band, Latin Groove Culture, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Theater of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.
“Think,” “Say a Little Prayer for You” and “Respect” — all Franklin signatures — will top off the concert, which is titled “Latin Mixtape … Take 1.”
Admission is free.
The show opens with the Celia Cruz classic “La Vida es un Carnaval” by Victor Daniel, followed by “Havana,” made famous by Camila Cabello, and “La Cuna Blanca,” an all-time favorite from Raphy Leavitt y la Selecta.
“We featured that song as part of the Office of Cultural Diversity’s presentation of the movie ‘Coco’ and how Hispanic cultures view the passing of family and friends,” said Latin Groove Culture director and Tarleton Assistant Professor Dr. Douglas Tejeda.
Also on the bill are “Brujeria,” recorded by El Gran Combo; the iconic Willie Chirino salsa version of the R&B classic “Just the Two of Us” by Bill Withers, Ralph MacDonald and William Salter; and “Para Los Remberos” as performed by Tito Puente.
As musical ambassadors for Tarleton State’s cultural diversity and outreach initiatives, Latin Groove Culture works to inspire, entertain and educate while exploring the different styles of Hispanic American and Afro-Caribbean music. It incorporates dance, multimedia and other forms of artistic collaboration designed to maximize audience engagement.
