STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University graduate social work student Timothy Lopez has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Hogg Foundation.

Each year the foundation awards scholarships to graduate social work students who have committed to joining the mental health workforce. The investment in careers goes toward improving the quality of mental health services in Texas.

This year 16 students from across the state, nominated by the heads of their social work programs, received an Ima Hogg Scholarship. The students were chosen for their potential to bring renewed energy to the Texas mental health workforce.

Timothy said he wants to work with churches to provide a “welcoming space for congregants to engage in dialogue around mental health” and to offer services addressing spiritual and psychological needs.

The scholarship, established in 1956, is one of the ways the foundation works to impact mental health services in Texas. It was created at the founder’s request to address the need for more trained social workers in Texas.
