STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Dr. Alex del Carmen, executive director of Tarleton State University’s School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies, has been named a Fulbright Specialist by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and World Learning.

The Fulbright Specialist program sends faculty and professionals from the United States to businesses and academic institutions in more than 150 countries. Countries must have a U.S. embassy or Fulbright commission to participate in the program.

Fulbright Specialists serve five-year appointments as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning and related subjects. Del Carmen, an expert on police practices and racial profiling, will collaborate with participating countries on civil and human rights law; constitutional law and theory; criminal law and procedure; federalism; and race and race relations.

As part of his work and research at Tarleton, Del Carmen has made academic presentations in the Czech Republic, Scotland, Belgium, Slovenia and Wales.

“I am deeply humbled and honored on the selection made by the U.S. Department of State and look forward in representing Tarleton and the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies before an international audience,” Del Carmen said.

Del Carmen has a Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice from Florida State University and is the author of several articles and books, including Racial Profiling in America (Prentice Hall Publishing, 2008). He serves as a federal monitor on behalf of the United States Courts in Puerto Rico.
