STEPHENVILLE, Texas — A team of Tarleton State University students placed second at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) concrete Frisbee competition last week in Houston.
The event was part of the annual ASCE Texas-Mexico Student Symposium.
Tarleton’s team — Raul Sandoval, Tovar Briones and Anthony Alvarez — created concrete disks that are aesthetically pleasing and not only fly but don’t break on landing.
The competition provides a hands-on experience to develop problem-solving skills related to engineering and implement principles of concrete mix design, aerodynamics and structural testing.
Two technical aspects, mix design and technical poster, make up the conference. Scoring is based on durability, aesthetics, distance and accuracy.
Other competitions were held for concrete bowling balls and concrete canoes.
A founding member of The Texas A&M System, Tarleton State University is breaking records — in enrollment, research, scholarship, athletics, philanthropy and engagement — while transforming the lives of approximately 18,000 students in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan and online.
