Tarleton”s Berghuis Moves Into First Place

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University bareback rider Tyler Berghuis moved into first place after a pair of 80-point rides during Tuesday competition at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
Berghuis, the 2018 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region reserve champion, scored an 81 in morning slack, then followed that ride with an 80 Tuesday night. His first-round score of 78 gives him a 239 tally on three head, six points ahead of second-place George Shadbolt of Doane University.
Tie-down roper Kyle Parrish also finished Tuesday near the top of the leaderboard. He flashed an 11.2 time in the morning, then turned in a 9.9 Tuesday evening. The 37.3-second, three-head time leaves him in fourth place overall.
A pair of Tarleton roughtstock cowboys got back on track Tuesday after being bucked off their first horses. Saddle bronc rider Brody Cress posted a 73 on his second ride to move into the top 20 and bareback rider Linden Woods earned a 78.5. Both have one more chance to move into the event finals on Saturday. Cress’ third go-round ride is today. He’s the only Tarleton representative in action for Wednesday night’s performance.
Wyatt Williams missed his tie-down calf and team roping header Ky Bray got no score Tuesday.
Tarleton’s men’s team is currently in fourth place with 220 points. Northwest Oklahoma State has accumulated 300 points for first place.
In women’s action Tuesday, five-time CNFR qualifier Baili Collins from Tarleton slipped into the top 20 in goat tying with her 6.2. She carries a 13.4 two-head score with one run to go.
Teammate Rylee Jo Dick got no score Tuesday in breakaway roping. She has one more round to add to her first-head 4.0.
The CNFR continues all week. Championship finals take place Saturday.
