Tarleton Associate Professor Dr. Kathy Horak Smith was recently elected to the Publications Committee of the Research Council on Mathematics Learning for the 2017-2020 term.

Smith has worked in the mathematics education field for more than 22 years, serving as an assistant and associate professor for the last 18.

She has co-authored two mathematics professional development modules for the Texas Education Agency.  She also collaborated on a science education textbook with Dr. Molly Weinburgh, and authored and co-authored more than 15 peer reviewed publications, most of which concern the integration of mathematics, science and language acquisition.

Smith is currently working on a book with Dr. Molly Weinburgh and Dr. Cecilia Silva about teaching mathematics, science, and language to multi-lingual learners.

Since working in the university ranks, Smith has given more than 35 presentations at national and international conferences, and provided numerous professional developments for in-service teachers.

Twice a Tarleton graduate, Smith obtained both her bachelor’s degree (1984) and her master’s in education (1990), before earning her Ph.D. from Georgia State University in 2000.
