STEPHENVILLE, Texas — A new shopping option celebrated its grand opening today with a ribbon-cutting in the Texan Village Clubhouse on Tarleton State University’s Stephenville campus.
Patterned after an urban grocery, the Oscar P General Store offers quick snacks and on-the-go meals. Fresh fruits and vegetables, deli items, dairy products and bread are available.
“The Oscar P General Store is a great addition to our growing list of amenities,” said university President James Hurley. “It puts ‘convenience’ in the convenience store for Tarleton Texans.”
The store also stocks Chick-fil-A, Dunkin, and Tarleton and Oscar P novelty items.
“The university and Sodexo both consider Oscar P’s a significant enhancement to the campus,” said Michael Benge, Tarleton Director of Auxiliary Services. “There are sections of specialty items, promotional items and greater selections of grocery-type items.”
Hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and noon-6 Saturdays and Sundays. Students may use their Texan bucks and Texan dollars.
The store is named for founder John Tarleton’s pet duck who, legend has it, went everywhere with him. Oscar P is said to be buried with Tarleton. He even has his own place on the larger-than-life Tarleton sculpture on campus.
A founding member of The Texas A&M System, Tarleton State University is breaking records — in enrollment, research, scholarship, athletics, philanthropy and engagement — while transforming the lives of approximately 18,000 students in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan and online. For 125 years, Tarleton State has been committed to accessible higher education opportunities for all while helping students grow academically, socially and professionally through programs that emphasize real world learning and address regional, state and national needs.
