STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Nationally recognized author and historian Dr. David Sehat will discuss “The Republican Party: From Reagan to Trump” as part of Tarleton State University’s third State of the American Society speaker series on Thursday, March 30.

The series brings leading scholars and Texas policymakers to Stephenville to discuss current U.S. events and critical issues. The free, public talk begins at 4:30 p.m. in room 118 of the O.A. Grant Humanities Building.  A book signing and chance to meet the speaker one-on-one follows the discussion.

A history professor at Georgia State University, Sehat will take an in-depth look at the evolution of the Republican Party from the election of Ronald Regan in 1980 to the present term of Donald Trump.

Sehat is author of The Jefferson Rule: How the Founding Fathers Became Infallible and Our Politics Inflexible (Simon and Schuster, 2015) and The Myth of American Religious Freedom (Oxford, 2011), which won the Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians.

Prior to arriving at Georgia State, Sehat completed his doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and spent a postdoctoral year at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as a visiting scholar. During the 2017-18 academic year, he will be the John G. Winant Visiting Professor of American Government of Oxford.
