STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Dallas attorney Scott Summy and his wife, Lenna, have donated $100,000 to Tarleton State University to create an endowed scholarship for students planning a legal career.
Nationally and reverentially known as “The Water Lawyer,” Scott Summy has successfully represented thousands of individuals and public entities against corporate giants responsible for environmental contamination since graduating from Tarleton in 1986 and earning his juris doctorate four years later from Texas Tech University School of Law.
Summy played a key role in gaining millions of dollars for people and businesses affected by the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and has recovered more than a billion dollars on behalf of cities across America whose public drinking water resources were contaminated.
“Our gift is a tribute to the huge role Tarleton has played in my success as an attorney,” he said. “It’s our way to pay it forward and help students pursue their dream of a university education.”
Summy received the Dick Smith Scholarship as a Tarleton freshman majoring in political science.
“Gifts of this level represent a powerful vote of confidence in our university,” said Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio. “We are fortunate to have such strong supporters as Scott and Lenna Summy. Their generous donation will help create the next generation of well-trained legal professionals.”
The Scott Summy Pre-Law Scholarship is available to students majoring in legal studies or political science with an emphasis in legal studies and/or international studies.
To qualify for the scholarship, current or transfer students must have a 3.5 GPA. Incoming freshmen must have finished in the top 25 percent of their graduating high school class and scored at least 1,000 on their SAT or 23 on their ACT. All applicants must enroll in 15 hours per semester and write an essay describing their career plans.
Tarleton will induct the Summys into the university’s Scholarship Society and John Tarleton Society at its annual gala in February.
