STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Friends of the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University, with sponsorship from the Stephenville Historical House Museum, hosts its ninth annual visit to the past as part of the Spirits of Erath Cemetery Walk on Sunday, Oct. 30.

In concert with the Day of the Dead, the public event takes place at the West End Cemetery at the corner of Washington and Lillian streets. Walks take place at 2 and 3:30 p.m.

Participants will hear about Stephenville and Erath County history through the lives of those who came before to settle and build the community. Walkers will be divided into groups and led through a portion of the cemetery by costumed community members and students.

At designated stops, actors will entertain walkers with skits about the men and women from Erath County’s colorful past. Historical characters include Dr. W. W. McNeill, Phoebe Haws, Viola Moore, Ita Eliza Berekman, Pearl Wylie Cage, Fred Chandler and Randolph Clark. Local actors will be Linda Brown, Doug Burns, Lori LaRue, Nathan LaRue, Robin Ritchie, Ed Tober and Sheran Weible. Tarleton’s Theatre Department will provide costumes.

Tickets are $5 per person, and proceeds benefit Friends of the Dick Smith Library and the Stephenville Historical House Museum.

Walkers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, hats and sunscreen. Folding chairs are allowed but must be moved from station to station. Water will be provided. There are no restrooms at the cemetery.

Parking is available across from the cemetery on Lillian Street as well at the south and west sides (use the entrance at Swan Street). In the event of inclement weather, the Cemetery Walk will be postponed until spring 2017.
