Affordable Tuition, Impactful Programs Earn Tarleton State National Distinction

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Colleges of Distinction has once again named Tarleton State University to its list of schools across the United States known for their exceptional contributions to higher education.

In addition to its undergraduate recognition as a 2026-27 National College of Distinction, Tarleton State was also commended in the categories of Texas, Public, International, Military, Business, Education, Engineering, Nursing and Transfer.

The university’s affordable tuition, welcoming campus community and strong career outcomes impacted this year’s selection.

“Being recognized as a 2026 College of Distinction reflects our commitment to delivering an outstanding educational experience that combines academic excellence with real-world opportunities,” said Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley. “Our students benefit from dedicated faculty, experiential learning and a supportive campus culture that prepares them to lead with confidence and purpose. This honor reinforces the value of a Tarleton State education and our mission to transform lives through opportunity and affordability.”

College students today are navigating rising tuition, fast-changing technology and questions about what the future of work will look like, said Colleges of Distinction Chief Operating Officer Tyson Schritter.

“What they need from higher education isn’t just a credential, but preparation for the world ahead,” Schritter said. “Tarleton State delivers that through the kind of intentional, high-impact education that equips students for whatever comes next.”

Colleges of Distinction evaluates schools using criteria known as the Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community and Successful Outcomes. Through extensive research and interviews, Colleges of Distinction identifies institutions that make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. Rather than relying on endowment figures or selectivity rates, Colleges of Distinction chooses schools following in-depth research and direct interviews with each institution, selecting those whose campuses reflect a genuine student-first philosophy.
