Success at Build Your Business Workshop

The Build Your Business Workshop, held on April 30, 2025, brought together local entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners for a session focused on refining brand messaging and sharpening presentation skills. Hosted by the Tarleton State University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center in partnership with Ensemble Coworking and Sparkyard.

Dr. Iyer opened the event with an overview of the organizational structure of the Division of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (RIED), including the University Center. She introduced the Center’s mission and goals, outlined its various products and activities, and highlighted recent accomplishments that reflect Tarleton’s growing impact on entrepreneurship and innovation in the region. As she concluded, Dr. Iyer reminded the audience, “Innovation begins when we choose to act on an idea. Our job is to help turn those ideas into reality.”

Yourman spoke to the audience about strategies to create concise, memorable introductions ideal for networking events, pitch sessions, or business meetings. She also broke down the essential components of a strong business presentation—from crafting a powerful opening to structuring in-depth content that resonates with potential customers and lenders. Yourman’s message was clear: “Your story is your secret weapon. Own it, sharpen it, and use it to stand out.”

Following the presentations, the event featured a live Q&A panel with three successful business leaders who shared their entrepreneurial journeys and insights.

Tamara Payne, lifelong entrepreneur and CEO of Ensemble Coworking, shared her passion for empowering women in business and building a strong, connected community. Her strategic consulting practice and community initiatives continue to inspire small business owners to pursue sustainable success.

Casey Raitz, CEO of U.S. Sand & Gravel, offered an inspiring story of grit and growth. He and his wife, Celeste, started their business in 2015 with a single used dump truck. Today, they run a thriving Stephenville-based operation with over 60 employees and a large fleet. Raitz emphasized customer service and community giving, highlighting how the company supports local residents during natural disasters.

Elena Hunderlach, CEO of Elena’s Crafts and a Tarleton State graduate, spoke about building her business by blending creativity with sound business strategies. Drawing from her degree in business administration and hands-on experience, she encouraged attendees to pursue their passions with intention. Her journey demonstrated how persistence, focus, and the right mindset can transform small ideas into thriving ventures.

The event was a tremendous success, attracting students, local entrepreneurs, and small business supporters. The Build Your Business Workshop equipped attendees with practical tools and inspiration, reinforcing the importance of community, storytelling, and resilience in building a successful business.
