Netiquette (Network Etiquette) Statement (QM Standard 1.3)

Appropriate and considerate communication is just as important online as in face-to-face conversations. The following bullet points cover some basics for communicating online:

  • Remember that you are engaged in conversation with your classmates and instructor, not the computer. Speak to the human at the other end of the conversation.
  • Be sensitive to the fact that there will be varied cultural, linguistic, political, and religious backgrounds among your classmates. Be respectful of others’ views and opinions.
  • Use appropriate language for an educational environment.
  • Keep in mind that others are basing their perception of who you are on your writing. To make your best impression, proofread your messages carefully before sharing, use good grammar and spelling, and avoid using text messaging shortcuts.
  • Be aware that slang and uncommon abbreviations can be misunderstood or misinterpreted.
  • Avoid using all capital letters when composing your responses as this is considered “shouting” on the Internet and is regarded as impolite or aggressive. It can also be stressful on the eye when trying to read your message.
  • Avoid “flaming” (publicly attacking or insulting) others as this can cause upset and discourage others from engaging in your course.

Expectations in your courses are for polite, constructive, and professional comments.

QM Standard 1.3: Communication guidelines for the course are clearly stated.
