STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University has named Melanie Johnson director of its Office of Diversity and Inclusion, effective Oct. 2. Now part of the Division of Student Affairs, the office fosters a campus community that values the dignity and contributions of all students, faculty and staff.

“Ms. Johnson embraces Tarleton’s commitment to the value and intrinsic worth of every individual,” said Dr. ShaRhonda Maclin, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, “and her experience with extended diversity programming throughout an institution will help us become the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond.”

Johnson comes to Tarleton from Tulane University, where she served as associate director of intercultural life and instructed a class on facilitating difficult conversations on social justice in 160 different settings. Before that, she served as coordinator of multicultural affairs at Southern Methodist University, implementing a training and certification program for faculty and staff.

In her new role at Tarleton, Johnson will help provide training, education and support in such areas as LGBTQIA, social justice, minority student leadership, and race and ethnicity.

“As part of my overall vision for Tarleton’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, I want to ensure that all students feel supported and that the university’s inclusion efforts can be felt across campus,” Johnson said. “I am excited to join the office in its first year as part of the Division of Student Affairs and look forward to helping Tarleton continue its efforts to create an environment where students of diverse backgrounds study, live and learn together.”

A Texas native, Johnson has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s in education from the University of Texas at Arlington.
