Research Interests

My research focuses on doctoral education and the development of scholar-practitioners, particularly how Ed.D. students build research skills, navigate the dissertation process, and receive the support needed to complete their degrees. I study how doctoral programs use student feedback, mentoring, and evidence to improve learning, persistence, and the faculty experience. My work also includes applied research and program evaluation in K–12 and higher education, with interests in student learning, educational interventions, and the use of data to guide improvement. In a previous life as a methodologist, my research examined score reliability and construct validity, including how measurement choices affect researcher conclusions.

Dissertation Chairing Style/Philosophy

I approach dissertation work as a partnership built on clear expectations, honest feedback, and steady progress. I provide structure and specific, detailed feedback to help students strengthen their thinking and writing. I aim to respond promptly, though there are times when feedback takes longer than I intend. I will be one of your biggest supporters throughout the process, but the responsibility for completing the work is yours. Taking initiative, being receptive to feedback, following through on revisions, and staying engaged are essential to moving your dissertation forward.

Dissertation Chairing Style/Philosophy

I typically serve as a research methodologist when serving on or chairing dissertation committees. In that role, I am open to working with students in a variety of content areas, spanning both K-12 education, higher education, and other related fields. I generally let the student “steer” the dissertation in terms of content (with input from their other committee members) and provide guidance on issues surrounding research design, data analysis, and writing. I enjoy working one-on-one with students and work best with those who are self-starters, but are willing to reach out for support as needed.

Dissertation Chairing Style/Philosophy

  • Care deeply for my students, as well as their families who are sacrificing for their pursuits.
  • Do not want anyone to pay for more semesters than they need to complete the program, but that is highly contingent on what level of readiness they bring to the process.
  • Prefer smaller chunks of work submitted weekly and attempt to provide substantial and meaningful feedback within 7-10 days.
  • Work through submissions in the order I receive them but will prioritize feedback for advanced students working against a deadline.
  • Clear and concise communication is an essential characteristic for scholar-practitioners, so my expectations for quality writing and use of good sources is extremely high.
  • I work to balance getting excellence in the products students produce and getting them finished.
  • I provide substantial scaffolding in the process through an assortment of resources and my feedback.
  • I am most always accessible if/when needed.

In Memoriam: Remembering those we’ve lost.

Dr. Don Beach in doctoral regalia.

Dr. Don Beach

Nov 4, 1946 — Apr 19, 2023

Dr. Don Michael Beach joined Tarleton in 1981 as Dean of the School of Education and Fine Arts but later returned to the classroom as an educational leadership Professor. He was on the UT Arlington faculty for eight years and taught science and biology at the elementary and secondary levels before that.

“Dr. Beach will be remembered as one of the most impactful faculty members in Tarleton history. He influenced superintendents, principals and teachers across the state, and he loved this institution. His wisdom will be deeply missed.” James Hurley, Tarleton University President

Dr. Beach was the Texas Council of Professors and Educational Administrators’ 2016 Educator of the Year, and The Texas A&M University System named him a Regents Professor in 2008. He received Tarleton’s O.A. Grant Excellence in Teaching Award, the Ted Booker Award from the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education, and the Laureate Award from the Association of Teacher Educators. Dr. Cindy Edwards’ employment with Tarleton State began in November of 2022 as a Visiting Assistant Professor, she then moved into an Assistant Professor & Coordinator role in September of 2023. Though her time with the Tarleton community was far too brief, she made a meaningful difference in the lives of her students and colleagues.

“Over the course of her career, Dr. Edwards touched countless lives across every stage of education — from our youngest learners to seasoned superintendents. She served as a school counselor, school librarian, and superintendent, and later brought that wealth of experience to Tarleton State as a faculty member. She also proudly held the distinction of being the very first graduate of our EdD in Educational Leadership program. Dr. Edwards’ passion for education shaped generations of students and educators alike. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of learning from her, working alongside her, and calling her a colleague and friend.” -Dr. Lesley Leach, Dean of the College of Education
