You’ve been selected for verification, now what?

You have submitted your FAFSA application and now the Office of Financial Aid is telling you that you have been selected for something called “verification.” Let me first start by explaining that being selected for verification is not a bad thing. Let me repeat, not a bad thing! Of all of the students that file their FAFSA, 30% get selected for verification. If you are one of those students, don’t stress! Verification is simply an audit process that the Department of Education uses to make sure that students are filling out the FAFSA correctly.

The Office of Financial Aid will reach out via email, text, or phone call to let you know you have been selected. Please be watching for all calls and emails from Tarleton State if you are an admitted student and have been selected for verification.

So why is verification important?

The simple answer is because you can’t receive financial aid until its completed! If you are planning to use grants, loans, or student employment to help pay for school, you must complete this process before you can receive that money!

How do you complete your verification? To complete verification, please follow the steps listed below:

Step 1: To start the verification process with Tarleton State University, you will need to visit: http://tarleton.verifymyfafsa.com

You can also access the page through https://www.tarleton.edu/finaid

Click on “Verify my FAFSA”

You will then need to register your online account and confirm your student information as seen below:

Tip: Ensure that the information (First name, last name, date of birth, and Social Security)  provided on your 2022-2023 FAFSA remains the same when you create your account.

Step 2: Upload all requested documents. For dependent students, (depending on type of verification), your parents must also sign and upload documents.

For example, Oscar P needs to complete the Dependent Verification Form for 2022/2023.

Other types of verifications can consist of:

  • Tax Returns
  • Citizenship/eligible non-citizen status
  • Veteran status
  • Documentation of independent student status
  • Identity/Statement of Educational Purpose and more

Tip: Always click the Submit and Finish buttons when completing verification. If it says congratulations then you have completed the verification.

*Please note that upon submission of required documents, additional information may be requested at any time during the verification process.

Step 3: Submit the file for review AND do not make any changes to your FAFSA

Step 4: Check your Tarleton student email. You will receive an update when verification is complete or if we need additional documentation.

The Most Common Mistake?

Waiting until the last minute to complete the verification process. The Office of Financial Aid cannot disburse any of your aid money if you have been selected and have not completed the verification process. This means that students who do not complete verification can not receive their aid to pay tuition, fees, dorm, etc. We have a deadline of June 1st, 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic aid year to have verification complete. Although it can seem like an overwhelming process and just another piece of the puzzle, it will be so worth it when you complete it! You will want your aid to help fund your college career!

We are here to help!

We do not want you to have to go through the verification process alone! Our staff is here to walk you through this process. We have daily appointments available with financial aid advisors to help you! If you are an admitted Tarleton Texan and have been selected for verification, feel free to make an appointment with our staff by calling our office at 254-968-9070 or by email [email protected].
