Fun Fact: Establishing a routine that works with your pre-existing schedule is the KEY to mastering grad school.
#1 TIME MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATION
Asynchronous learning works so well because it allows you the opportunity to work at your own pace. However, that flexibility can also make it feel impossible to complete tasks big and small. That’s why, once you have your class syllabus, it’s imperative to establish a fixed routine.
Having a fixed routine can look different for everyone. Whether that looks like offering yourself daily/weekly incentives for completing tasks or if you prefer setting weekday deadlines to help clear up your weekends, creating a reward system is a great way to keep you organized and motivated.
“I have always tried to get all my work done before Fridays or Saturdays so I can have a restful weekend. This is especially helpful if I have plans. In addition, a classmate and I will meet up in Dallas to celebrate another class/semester down. This started the first semester of my program and it definitely helps keep me pushing and gives me the chance to celebrate the hard work.” – Annie Hailey, TAMU Marketing Student
“I like to offer myself incentives when I start my homework so that I avoid picking up my phone or a book! If I finish an assignment, I get to complete the New York Times mini crossword and I won’t let myself do it until I finish an assignment.” – Blake Smith, TSU Business Management Student
In addition to establishing a routine with built-in incentives, it’s important to create some sort of organization system to keep you on top of your work. For some students, the utilization of digital apps like Notion or digital calendars works best. (You simply cannot beat a monthly calendar view when it comes to staying on top of your hard deadlines.)

#2 LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
You need to find your ideal work stations, both in and outside of your home. For me, being able to spread all of my work out on the living room coffee table during late night study sessions was essential during my winter minimester! However, now that work is back in full-swing, being able to get out of the house and set up shop at one of my local coffee spots helps keep me motivated, eliminating any distractions.
Much like everything else with graduate school, you have to find what works best for you. If you thrive in the chaos, a coffee shop might be just what you need to stay motivated and energized. If you prefer complete silence, visit your local library! It’s 100% free and you’ll have unlimited access to a number of resources that might be just what you need to get your work done.
#3 IT’S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT’S WHO YOU KNOW
It takes a village to earn a graduate degree. (Or something like that!) Graduate school is all about building relationships, whether that’s with your professors or your peers, it’s all about who you know.
Sometimes simply joining your class’ group chat or connecting with at least one person in your program can make all the difference during your grad school journey. Knowing that you have someone in your corner, someone who might be on a similar journey, can also help alleviate some of your fears about continuing your education.

#4 ACADEMIC & PERSONAL WELL-BEING
BOUNDARIES WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE! Similarly to establishing a healthy routine, it’s important to enact boundaries that will hold you and your inner circle accountable. These are essential for preventing burnout.
Once you’ve set your routine “work” hours, stick to them to the best of your ability (and make others comply). On the flip side, also establish a set of “fun” hours. During fun time, refrain from thinking about your homework and vice versa.
Setting firm boundaries with yourself and others around you can only positively impact your graduate school journey.
#5 COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Simply put, if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask!
The College of Graduate Studies here at Tarleton State prides itself on ensuring that you have everything you need to succeed.
“This semester, I have asked professors to open exams early and requested additional time for assignments in order to fit into my schedule. They have all been extremely committed to being flexible.”
