Dear Tarleton State Texan Family,

As we begin preparations for the upcoming fall semester, the 89th legislative session has concluded, with state leaders making it clear that they recognize the many ways we’re making a positive impact on students.

Historic support for Tarleton State University continued, including $5 million in non-formula support for the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine (applicant status — seeking accreditation). The Texas Legislature has now committed over $17 million to Tarleton State for the sole purpose of enhancing rural healthcare across the state of Texas. Overall, Tarleton State has seen a 50% increase in state appropriations over the last three bienniums.

Positioning our university to address critical healthcare needs was a key focus during this legislative session. The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine will help us meet our state’s tremendous need in rural and medically underserved communities. We are appreciative of the efforts of State Sen. Brian Birdwell (District 22) and State Rep. Shelby Slawson (District 59) in partnering with us to share our message.

During this historic time at our institution, we are shattering records in enrollment, retention, student success and financial support as we deliver a world-class education. As a result, Tarleton State has received increases in general revenue funding for the next biennium correlated to the growth of our university. This will allow us to sustain efforts to expand access and opportunity for our students.

Continuing the state’s commitment to helping institutions provide affordability while meeting workforce demands, lawmakers also awarded the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in excess of $300 million in additional funding to allocate to public institutions like Tarleton State in the form of grants.

Thanks to the steadfast backing of our state legislators, The Texas A&M System Board of Regents, outgoing Chancellor John Sharp and incoming Chancellor Glenn Hegar, the future for our institution is brighter than ever.

As always, may you forever Bleed Purple!

Dr. James Hurley
President
