Doctoral Field Experience

The PhD in Counseling program provides doctoral students with extensive, faculty-supervised field experiences across three core areas of counselor education and supervision: advanced counseling practice, clinical supervision, and teaching. Through a structured sequence of practica and internships, students progress from refining their clinical skills to supervising master’s-level counselors-in-training and co-teaching graduate coursework alongside core faculty. Each experience is closely mentored by doctoral faculty and licensed site supervisors, ensuring students receive individualized feedback as they develop the competencies required of counselor educators and supervisors.

Our program’s field experience sequence significantly exceeds the minimum requirements set by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), reflecting our commitment to producing graduates who are fully prepared to enter the professoriate, clinical supervision roles, and leadership positions within the counseling profession. Students leave the program with hands-on experience in direct client care, individual and group supervision of emerging counselors, and independent classroom instruction, equipping them with the practical foundation needed for successful careers as counselor educators.
