Accreditation
The Department of Counseling was recently awarded reaffirmation of national accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) for our M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through October 31, 2034. As such, all of our program’s curriculum and standards align with CACREP standards.
A note: Our M.S in School Mental Health Counseling and our Ph.D. In Counseling are aligned with CACREP accreditation. We will apply for accreditation review for both programs in Fall 2026.
Why CACREP Matters
- It is the recognized training standard for counselors by the Institute of Medicine and the Veteran’s Administration
- It promotes a unified identity as professional counselors and counselor educators.
- Its curricula content areas are the require educational training for counseling licensure in most states, making CACREP-accreditation a pathway to portability.
The Value of an Accredited Program
Accredited Programs provide you:
- recognition that the program has been evaluated and meets or exceeds national standards
- knowledge that the graduate has met prerequisites for credentialing and is ready for entry into professional practice
- understanding that the focus of the program will be on professional counseling, not psychology, education or other helping professions
