College Myths We’re Officially Debunking | Tarleton State

Think you know what college is really like? Think again! From the idea that you have to know your future before you start to the belief that you need Greek life to be involved on campus, there are plenty of myths that can make the next chapter feel more intimidating than it really needs to be. The truth? Everyone’s college experience looks a little different, and there’s more to it than you might expect. Let’s bust some common college myths and uncover what life as a college student is really like!

MYTH: Your assigned random roommate will be your best friend

Living with someone new is a big part of the college experience, but that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically become inseparable. You might become lifelong friends, or you might simply learn how to share a space, respect each other’s routines, and get along. Both are completely okay! Your roommate is just one of the many people you’ll meet along the way, so don’t put pressure on yourself to find your entire friend group on move-in day.

MYTH: You need Greek life to be involved on campus

Greek life is just one of many ways to get involved as a Texan. With student organizations, intramural sports, campus traditions, volunteer opportunities, and events happening throughout the year, there are plenty of ways to meet new people and make your college experience your own. Whether you want to try something new, build leadership skills, or connect with people who share your interests, Tarleton State has opportunities to help you find your place. You don’t have to join a fraternity or sorority to make friends, get involved, and feel like part of the Texan family!

MYTH: You will get lost on your first day of school

Our growing campus can be intimidating on the first day, especially trying to make it to class on time while getting Mom your first day of school photo in front of the ring statue. During T-Week, you will have allotted time with your T-Week leaders to help find your classes. If you are still unsure on the first day, thankfully Tarleton State’s faculty and staff are positioned throughout campus, typically at tables full of goodies, and will gladly help direct you if needed. We also have large directory maps posted throughout campus! Your first day will be one to remember, and before you know it, you’ll be navigating campus like a pro!

MYTH: You are all on your own

Far from it! As a student, you have access to Counseling services on campus with a team of professionals focused on healing and supporting students. Your academic advisors will be by your side throughout your journey to help you succeed. From general course selection questions to graduation planning, they will be there every step of the way. If you need a little extra individual help on a course, don’t worry; the Tutoring and Learning Center has over 90 courses their tutors can help you with! The best part: all these services are included in your tuition!

MYTH: You have to know your future before you start

You don’t have to have your entire future mapped out before becoming a Texan. You might not know exactly what you want to study, or maybe you’re still exploring your interests. Either way, you belong here! At Tarleton State, you’ll have opportunities to explore different subjects, connect with faculty, gain hands-on experience, and discover new passions along the way. Your goals might change, and that’s completely normal! College is all about learning, growing, and figuring out what’s right for you. You don’t need a five-year plan on day one. You just need to be ready to take the first step.

MYTH: Skipping class is no big deal

College is a new world of freedom and flexibility, but that also means taking responsibility for your success. Skipping a class here and there might seem harmless, but it will quickly catch up to you. Missing lectures, assignments, and important discussions will make it harder to keep up. At Tarleton State, your professors are there to help you learn, ask questions, and make the most of your education. Showing up, staying engaged, and building good habits early can make a big difference in your college experience. Life happens, and sometimes you’ll need a day off, but making attendance a priority helps set you up for success not only in the classroom but in adulthood!

MYTH: College campus dining halls are not so great

We might be biased, but our dining hall is top tier. Inside, we have soft serve ice cream, homestyle cooking, and wraps/sandwiches. A fan favorite is Adobo Cantina with an award-winning chef! In addition to the dining hall selections, we have many other options on campus such as Chick-fil-A, Auntie Anne’s, Blaze Pizza, Buffalo Wild Wings, Dunkin, Starbucks, Panera Bread, and Baskin-Robbins. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between classes or satisfying a sweet tooth, there’s something for every craving!

MYTH: Move-in day is hot and exhausting

At Tarleton State, our Texan Movers make your move-in day a breeze. You won’t even have to lift a finger! From the moment you arrive on campus, our team will help direct you to the correct residence hall, get you checked in, and start unloading your car. Once you make your way to your room, you will find all your belongings ready for you to settle in. The Tarleton State move-in experience is designed to make your first moment on campus as seamless as possible.

MYTH: It’s not cool to participate in traditions

Traditions are what make being a Texan so special! College is about making memories, finding your people, and being a part of something bigger than yourself. At Tarleton State, traditions like the Purple Pancakes, Silver Bugle Hunt, Bonfire, and Yell Contest bring Texans together and create memories lasting long after graduation. You don’t have to know every tradition on day one or participate in every activity. Just show up to what interests you, join the fun, and see what makes the Texan experience so unique. You might even find that the traditions you thought weren’t your thing become some of your favorite college memories!

Actually, this is the best place to start building your community. Some alumni say that they found their best friends at Duck Camp! It’s an opportunity to meet fellow Texans, make connections before classes even begin, and start building friendships with students who are in the same boat as you. You might arrive not knowing a single person, but you could leave with friendships that last long after college ends.
