Overview
To ensure a smooth start, we have prepared a checklist of important tasks to complete during your first week and first month at Tarleton State.
First Week Tasks
Purchase a Parking Permit
Complete the necessary registration forms on the Parking Service’s website.

Hours or Operation: Monday-Friday, 8am – 5pm
Prior State Service, If Applicable
If you have previously worked at Tarleton State or another Texas state agency, be sure to complete the Prior State Service section…
Review Important Policies & Procedures
Holiday Pay
- Eligible full-time employees receive paid holiday leave. Qualifying regular part-time employees receive paid holiday on a pro-rated basis. The State legislature determine the number of holidays observed by State agencies and State institutions of Higher Education each year. Paid Holiday Schedule
Staff Remote Work
- Flexible Work Arrangements mutually benefit the needs of Tarleton and the employee, increase productivity and/or enhance the service capabilities as outlined in Texas A&M University System Regulation 33.06.01. Flexible Work Arrangements
Vacation
- Eligible employees may use vacation accruals after six months of continuous State employment. Qualifying regular part-time employees earn vacation on a pro-rated basis. Faculty members appointed to a 12-month position who observe the staff/administrative work schedule may earn vacation. Accrual for eligible employees is based upon months of verified State service. Sick Leave
- Eligible full-time employees earn 8 hours of sick leave per working month and may use sick leave immediately upon accrual when sickness, injury or pregnancy prevent an employee from duty, or to care for an immediate family member who is ill. Qualifying regular part-time employees earn sick leave on a pro-rated basis. Positions requiring student status are not eligible for paid sick leave. Sick Leave

Employee Benefit Options
Benefits Enrollment
You must enroll in benefits within 31 days from the date you become eligible. You have some options on when your coverage begins:
- You can elect coverage for you and your dependents to start on your hire/initial eligibility date if you enroll before, on or within seven days after you hire/initial eligibility date.
- You can elect coverage to begin on the first of the month following hire/initial eligibility if you enroll before the end of the month of your hire/initial eligibility
- If you enroll beyond the seventh day after your hire/initial eligibility date, but during your 31 days enrollment period, your coverage will start on your employer contribution eligibility date (the first of the month after your 60th day of employment.

Begin Mandatory Compliance Training
TrainTraq is the online training platform used by all members of the Texas A&M System to believe and manage training content. It can be accessed through your Single-Sign-On (SSO) menu.
As outlined in Texas A&M System Regulation 33.05.02, all employees of Tarleton State University must complete the required courses listed below within 30 days of their hire date. Additional training may be assigned by the department heads or supervisors based on specific job responsibilities.
- Orientation to the A&M System (one time requirement)
- Creating a Discrimination Free Workplace/EEO (every 2 years)
- Ethics and Fraud (every year)
- Shots Fired (every year)
- Flash Point (every year)
- Information Security Awareness (every year)
- Title IX (every year)
- Clery Act (every year)
- FERPA (every year)
- Export Controls & Embargo Training – Basic Course (every 2 years)
- Branding, Licensing, and Trademarks (every 3 years)
First Month Tasks
Your first month is about finalizing HR tasks, settling in, connecting with your team, and exploring campus life.
Benefit Enrollment
If you did not elect benefit coverage on your first day of employment, you have still have time to elect coverage.
Mandatory Compliance Training
Compliance training must be complete by the end of your first month of employment.
Other Tasks to Complete During Your First Month
- Take a campus tour.
- Ask for feedback from your supervisor and ask questions.
- Meet with co-workers to get an overview of their jobs.
- Review Tarleton State and departmental websites to familiarize yourself within the organization.
