Dick Smith Scholarship in Arts and Sciences

This prestigious scholarships awards $3,000 dollars per year to incoming freshman majoring in the College of Liberal & Fine Arts including history, sociology, political science, legal studies, and international studies. Continuing funding is available to students who maintain GPA and credit hour standards. Dr. Dick Smith, a graduate of Harvard University, was the first chair of the Department of Social Sciences when it was formed from a merger of economics and sociology with government and history in 1948. He served as department head until 1967 when he returned to teaching.

This scholarship is available to students majoring in a department in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts or the College of Science and Technology. Incoming students must be ranked in the top 25% of their high school class, have a B+ average on all high school work, and an ACT composite of 25 or higher or a SAT total (math and verbal) 1100 or higher/New SAT total (math and verbal) 1170. Returning students must enroll in and complete 15 semester hours and maintain a 3.2 cumulative and semester GPA.

Joe R. & Teresa L. Long Scholarship

This scholarship awards $2,000 per year to excellent students in the College of Liberal & Fine Arts regardless of the initial year of application. Joe and Teresa Long have been enthusiastic supporters of the arts, having been collectors for over three decades and helping found and support arts centers in Austin. Joe, a Tarleton graduate, and Teresa both found passion in not only the arts but in education and technology.

Recipients must have a declared major in the College of Education and Human Development, College of Liberal and Fine Arts, or College of Science and Technology. Incoming Freshmen requirements: top 25% of class, B+ average on high school work, and an ACT 23 composite or SAT 1000 total/New SAT 1080 total (math and verbal). Returning Student requirements: full-time student, 3.0 current semester GPA and 3.0 cumulative GPA.

O.A. Grant Scholarship in History/Government

This scholarship of varying amounts is awarded to students with declared majors in either history or political science. Dr. O.A. Grant began teaching at Tarleton in 1948 as a political science professor, and served as department head for a time before returning to teach full time. A dedicated professor, Dr. Grant cared about his classes and his students and was distinguished as an Outstanding Educator.

This scholarship will be given to students majoring in history or government (political science). Recipients must be incoming freshmen who have an SAT total of 1050 (math and verbal) or higher/New SAT total of 1130 or higher or an ACT composite of 22 or higher, have a “B’ average in high school and enroll in 15 semester college hours for disbursement. If there are not suitable freshmen, then other history or political science majors can be considered with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Recipients must enroll in 15 hours each long semester.

Dr. W.H. Stanley, Sr. and Dr. Leslie Stanley-Stevens Scholarship

Dr. Leslie Stanley-Stevens was a professor of sociology at Tarleton State University, and received the Faculty Excellence award, the Texas A&M System Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was a Texas A&M System Regents Professor. She began teaching at Tarleton in 1995 and was a published author, an influential and inspiring professor, a recognized researcher, and internationally recognized scholar.

Dr. W.H. Stanley was a graduate school professor of education, specializing in educational law. His first job after his undergraduate degree was as principal and head football coach in Dublin, Texas. He served in education for over thirty years in a number of roles: coach, teacher, principle, videosuperintendent, dean, and professor. As a videosuperintendent, he was instrumental in the desegregation of schools in the Dallas Independent School District.

This scholarship is available to a student who has successfully completed at least 30 hours of undergraduate work, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, is a declared major in sociology with first preference given to pre-ministry track/concentration. The recipient must be involved in developing the Sociology program through active membership in the Sociology Club and/or has presented or will present at a professional conference.

Dr. Christopher Guthrie Scholarship

Dr. Christopher Guthrie was a professor of history at Tarleton State for many decades and head of the Department of Social Sciences from 2011 to 2014. He served in many capacities at Tarleton, in addition to being a popular teacher with students of all majors enjoying his classes. He was recognized as a Texas A&M System Regents Professor. As a distinguished scholar in French history, he wrote in numerous publications and presented regularly at conferences.

This scholarship require students to maintain full-time status (12 hours for an undergraduate student/9 hours for a graduate student during the long semester), major in history, and maintain good standing with the University.

Evelyn Wisdom Memorial Scholarship

Evelyn Wisdom attended Tarleton in the mid-1920s, and as an active student she was a member of the Les Lunettes, a social club on campus, and sponsored the 2nd Battalion ROTC. An educator in Texas she dedicated her life to the betterment of others.

This scholarship is available to full-time students majoring in history demonstrating financial need. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be a U.S. citizen and resident of the state of Texas. The recipient must also be a graduate of a Texas High School.

Winnie McAnelly-Fiedler Memorial Scholarship

Winnie McAnelly-Fiedler, along with her sister Zora, were pioneers in Texas Education. Nominated Teacher of the Year, followed by numerous local and national awards for teaching, Winnie was a dedicated history teacher. She traveled the world, bringing back new teaching instruments to help her students. Her local town of Mineral Wells has a dedicated day to honor her and her numerous accomplishments, not in the least her passion for her students.

Recipient must be a student majoring in history (or equivalent program). First preference to history majors from Mineral Wells, Gustine, or Brady High School. Incoming Freshman: 1. must have a minimum SAT score of 1000/New SAT score of 1080 or ACT score of 22. 2. high school GPA of a “B” must be in top 1/3 of graduating class. 3. enrolled in at least 15 hours during semester of disbursement. 4. declared major in history.

Current Undergraduates: 1. minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 2. enrollment in at least 15 hours during the semester of disbursement. 3. declared major in history.

Graduate Students: 1. minimum GRE score of 1000 (or at least 600 in Verbal section). 2. undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (and 3.5 for all history courses). 3. graduate GPA (if already attending TSU) of 3.5. 4. enrollment in at least 12 hours during semester of disbursement. 5. declared major in history.
