About Dr. Dwain Mayfield

Following approval from The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, Tarleton State University celebrates the naming of its College of Engineering in honor of longtime benefactor, Distinguished Alumnus and retired Lockheed Martin executive Dr. A. Dwain Mayfield. This is Tarleton’s first academic college named for an individual.

Dr. Mayfield’s insightful vision and generous giving enable Tarleton’s engineering graduates to strengthen communities, fast-track discoveries and explore the never-been-dones — and not just to earn a degree, but because our regional economy and quality of life depend on it. Texas is among the top 10 states with a growing need for highly skilled engineering and computer science graduates, and the Mayfield College of Engineering is a pipeline to supply them.

Dr. Mayfield played a major role in the success of the F-16 fighter jet as an engineer at Fort Worth’s General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin), advancing to Vice President for Program Development and leading worldwide marketing for the F-16 before his retirement.

He earned an associate degree at Tarleton — long before there was an engineering degree program — then his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and a master’s in business administration from TCU. Tarleton awarded him an honorary doctorate of humane letters in 2017.
