The Journalism and Broadcasting program (JOBR) is a multi-layered study of traditional and contemporary aspects related to the news media industry. This program aims to teach students in different areas of news media:

Journalism

Students learn the foundations of journalism such as the Society of Professional Journalists code of ethics, Associated Press style, and publicly available information through basic courses like News Gathering and Writing. Students learn to research, write, photograph, and edit news stories for print in newspapers and magazines as well as online through websites and social media. Courses include:

  • Feature Writing
  • News and Magazine Editing
  • Advanced Reporting.

Broadcasting

In the Broadcasting area, classes will help students learn how to present traditional journalism into a broadcast format. Emphasis on radio broadcasting and podcasting, television and streaming broadcasts, and digital video production will help students to develop multimedia skills that are required for today’s journalist. Courses include:

  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Broadcast Production
  • Digital Video Production.

Internships

Students have the opportunity from their first week in college until their graduating semester to be a part of the Texan News Service. Texan News Service publishes a student newspaper, maintains an online news portal, and produces Texan TV broadcasts. This is a paid internship with the opportunity for promotion. Interested students can find information about applying to the internship online.

We have contacts with a number of community journalism news outlets through the Texas Center for Community Journalism, a journalism organization based at Tarleton. This relationship affords our students opportunities for internships and jobs at community papers in Erath and surrounding counties in the Cross Timbers area and across the state.

Facilities

The Department of Communication Studies has technology and facilities comparable to what students will find on-the-job in their career to develop their multimedia and journalism skills. We have a newsroom with a four-desk carousel, integrated control room and broadcast studio, and editing bays for digital video and audio production.

You can find academic advising guides and course rotations for Communication Studies in the online catalog.
