Professional Biography

Dr. Crissa Nugen’s research interests are interdisciplinary and established in a larger field of study of human issues in horticulture (HIH), and how plants and horticulture affect human life and well-being. Her past research includes ethnobotany and modern culture associated with marigolds (Tagetes erecta, T. patula, T. tenuifolia), the effects of human interventions influencing the coevolution of plants and butterflies, landscape design efficacy for outdoor learning environments, and implementation of therapeutic horticulture programming within public gardens. Her latest research centers on knowledge and perceptions of nutritious food and applications of culinary medicine. Her research expectations are to contribute to personal wellness and healthcare strategy decision-making based upon the use of food is medicine.
