Insurance Plans

The Texas A&M University System is committed to offering its employees a comprehensive benefits package at a competitive cost. This package includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, accidental death & dismemberment, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts,

Eligible employees who with to enroll in TAMUS insurance program will receive the basic coverage package consisting of:

  • A&M Care Plan for Employee Only
  • A&M Care Plan Pharmacy Benefit
  • $50,000 in Basic Life Insurance for Employee Only by MetLife
  • $50,000 in Basic Accidental Death and Dismemberment for Employee Only by MetLife

Eligible employees who wish to gain coverage beyond the basic coverage package may enroll themselves and eligible dependents in the following optional insurance benefits:


Annual Enrollment

Your opportunity to enroll in, change, or update your insurance benefits for the upcoming plan year.

July 10 – 31, 2026: Annual Open Enrollment.*

September 1, 2026 – August 31, 2027: Plan Year

*Deadlines are firm and cannot be extended – even if you are out of town, off-site, or away from campus.


Qualifying Life Event (QLE)

Changes can be made to your benefits during the Open Enrollment period. During the plan year, you can only change your medical coverage within 31 days of a Qualifying Life Event.

Qualifying Life Events Include:

  • Employee’s marriage or divorce of death of employee’s spouse
  • Birth, adoption or death of a dependent child
  • Change in employee’s, spouse’s or dependent child’s employment status that affect benefit eligibility, such as leave without pay
  • Child becoming ineligible for coverage due to reaching maximum age
  • Change in the employee’s, spouse’s or a dependent’s child’s residence that affects eligibility for coverage
  • Employee’s receipt of a qualified medical child support order or letter from the Attorney General ordering the employee to provide (or allowing the employee to drop) medical coverage for a child
  • Changes made by a spouse or dependent child during his/her open enrollment period with another employer
  • The employee, spouse or dependent child becoming eligible or ineligible for Medicare or Medicaid
  • Significant employer or carrier initiated changes, such as, significant premium increase, coinsurance increase or cancellation of the employee’s, spouse’s or dependent child’s coverage
  • The employee or dependent reaching the lifetime maximum for all benefits from a non-A&M System medical plan (medical plan changes only)
  • Change in day care costs due to a change in provider, change in provider’s fees (if the provider is not a relative) or change in the number of hours the child needs day care (for Dependent Date Care Spending Accounts)
  • The employee or dependent child loses coverage under the state Medicaid or CHIP plans of becomes eligible for premium assistance under the Medicaid or Chip

Documentation Is Required for Life Event Changes

Birth/AdoptionBirth:
– Birth certificate of child(ren) proving relationship of child(ren) to employee/retiree, OR
– Certification of Vital Records proving relationship of child(ren) to employee/retiree, OR
– Verification of Birth Facts Form proving relationship or newborn child(ren) to employee/retiree OR
– Valid Medical Support Order requiring employee/retiree to provide medical coverage, OR
– Paternity test accompanied by Court Order, Medical Support Order or reissued Birth Certificate

Adoption:
The documents will depend on the current stage of the adoption.
– Valid Pre-Adoption Placement Order issued by a Licensed Child Placement Agency, OR
– Valid Court Order naming employee/retiree as Managing Conservator of Child(ren), OR
– Valid Court Order of Adoption, OR
– Birth Certificate of Child(ren) with Adoptive Parent(s), OR
– Valid Medical Support Order requiring employee/retiree to provide medical coverage
Marriage– IRS Transcript of your current filed Federal Tax Return from the IRS.gov website showing you are married filing jointly or married filing separately, OR
– Valid government-issued marriage license, AND
– Proof of join ownership issued within the last six months. If within two years of marriage date, proof of joint ownership is not required.
Changes due to spouse’s Open EnrollmentWritten notice from spouse’s HR/benefits office confirming add or drop of benefits, including the effective date of the change, corresponding coverages and dependents impacted by the change.
Dependent daycare provider cost/hour changeReceipt or notice of change from provider
