Student Employment Hiring Manager Resources
Overview
Student employees play an important role in supporting the Tarleton State community while gaining valuable professional experience and developing workplace skills. The Student Hiring page provides hiring managers with resources and guidance throughout the entire student employment process, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and supervising student employees in alignment with university and Texas A&M System policies and procedures.
Roles & Responsibilities
Hiring managers and supervisors play a key role in the student employment process by ensuring compliance with university, Texas A&M System, and Human Resources policies and procedures.
Hiring Manager & Supervisor
Student Hiring & Onboarding
- Write job descriptions and post jobs according to Human Resources guidelines.
- Verify each candidate’s eligibility.
- Interview and select candidates.
- Submit student information via Kuali to begin hiring.
- Supervise timesheets and system policies.
Supervision & Training
- Set clear expectations and goals for student employees.
- Schedule brief check-ins to monitor progress and address concerns.
- Use Student Resources for training guides and professional development programs.
Performance Management
- Address performance or attendance issues quickly and professionally.
- Document conversations about expectations and improvement.
- Conduct evaluations if required.
- Consult HR Business Partners for disciplinary actions or terminations
Compliance & University Policies
- Follow policies for:
- EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity)
- Title IX and anti-discrimination
- FERPA/privacy
- Student hour restrictions
- Keep accurate employment records
- Review Student Resources Policies & Guides for updates.
Student Employee
Student Requirements
- Maintain minimum required academic enrollment.
- Submit accurate timesheets by deadlines (via Workday).
- Follow department and university procedures.
- Use HR Student Resources as needed.
Student Employment Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled Tarleton State student (undergraduate or graduate)
- Minimum enrollment:
- Undergraduate: Six credit hours during Fall & Spring semesters
- Graduate: Determined by program requirements
- Summer: Three credit hours
- Cannot be benefits-eligible or a full-time employee
- International students must have work authorization
