Reflections Ceremony Marks Transition from Student to Educator at Tarleton State

Surrounded by mentors, family, and peers, Tarleton State University’s newest educators prepare to enter the profession.

On Friday, May 1, 2026, Tarleton State University’s graduating clinical and resident teachers gathered for a Reflections Ceremony hosted by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Held in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Auditorium, the event provided an opportunity for the College of Education to intentionally pause and recognize the newest group of educators prepared to enter the profession.

Department Head Dr. James (Jim) Gentry welcomed the graduates, their families, and several honored guests including former Dean Dr. Jill Burk and former Department Head Dr. Ann Callahan, before introducing the inspirational speaker, Dr. Kenny Estes. A Tarleton State alumnus, Dr. Estes currently serves as the Superintendent of Alvarado ISD, one of the university’s teacher residency partner districts.

While many students had previously heard from Dr. Estes in his professional role, this address offered a more personal perspective. He shared a powerful story from his first day of college, highlighting a simple yet meaningful act of compassion from an educator that ultimately helped shape his approach to teaching. He later discovered that the moment had also left a lasting impression on the educator involved. In closing, he encouraged graduates to “never forget that you will impact generations of lives.”

The ceremony also included individual recognition of each graduating educator. In a moment shared with their clinical or residency supervisor, each student received a commemorative pin and an exclusive t-shirt marking them as a Tarleton State teacher graduate. Dean Dr. Lesley Leach led the students through donning their pins, symbolizing their transition into the profession. Kate Tallent, President of the Renaissance Scholars for Secondary Education, then led the group through reciting the Tarleton State Educator Oath, written by students in 2025, which honors their commitment to teaching.

The following awards were also announced:

  • Charles Butt Scholarship Recipients: Brittany Roach and Lainey Vollmer
  • Outstanding Clinical Teacher: Bryson Tarpley
  • Outstanding Elementary Resident Teacher: Kenadee Fisk
  • Outstanding Secondary Resident Teacher: Cara Harris

The evening concluded with a reception where graduates and their families had the opportunity to celebrate and connect with the faculty who supported them throughout their journey.
