Tarleton State University faculty and students, along with local educators and community members are invited to participate in a free, author-led book study this fall as a part of Still Among Us: Exploring Native American Legacy in Texas and Oklahoma, a multi-part public humanities initiative funded by a President’s Excellence in Research Scholars (PERS) grant. This initiative is supported by the College of Education and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
Led by Dr. W. Dale Weeks, author of Cherokee Civil Warrior: Chief John Ross and the Struggle for Tribal Sovereignty, the virtual book study will explore Indigenous history, identity, and the ongoing fight for tribal sovereignty. Participants will receive a free, signed hardcover copy of the book, a guided reading plan, and exclusive access to three live Zoom discussions with the author.
“This book isn’t just about history, it’s about understanding the living legacy of Native nations and their ongoing fight for sovereignty,” said Dr. Eliel Hinojosa, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and director of this project. “It’s an opportunity to learn directly from a historian whose work brings these stories into sharp focus for our time. I’m also proud to partner with Dr. Steven Peach, Associate Professor of History at Tarleton State, whose expertise in Native American history enriches every aspect of this program.”
Book Study Discussion Dates
The virtual book study discussions with the author will take place via Zoom from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:
- Monday, September 15
- Monday, October 6
- Monday, November 3
Only 35 spots are available for this opportunity. Registration is free but required to receive a copy of the book and access to the virtual sessions.
This book study is the first phase of the Still Among Us project, which will culminate in a live symposium at Tarleton State University Fort Worth on November 13, 2025.
