Chapter 33: Post 9/11 G.I. Bill®
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® helps pay for tuition and fees, provides a monthly housing allowance (BAH), and offers up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies. Active-duty service members and reservists who have served at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001 may qualify.
What you need to apply:
- Request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form to the Tarleton State Veteran Services Office. ·
- If you are still on active duty, housing allowance is not payable until after separation.
Chapter 30: Montgomery G.I. Bill® (MGIB)
The Montgomery G.I. Bill® – Active Duty provides a monthly stipend to the student. It is available to those who have served at least two years on active duty and paid into the MGIB program.
What you need to apply:
- Request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form to the Tarleton State Veteran Services Office.
- Remember: benefits are paid directly to you each month, so you are responsible for paying tuition and fees to the university.

Chapter 1606: MGIB-Reserves
Chapter 1606 offers education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, and the Army and Air National Guard. It provides a monthly stipend while you are enrolled in classes.
What you need to apply:
- Apply for benefit on VA.org
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form to the Tarleton State Veteran Services Office.
State Tuition Assistance
The Texas State Tuition Assistance program supports Texas National Guard members, Texas Air Guard members, and Texas State Guard members who are actively drilling and in good standing. It helps cover a portion of tuition and fees at public colleges and universities in Texas.

Federal Tuition Assistance
Federal Tuition Assistance is available to eligible active duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members. It typically covers up to 100% of tuition costs, not to exceed $250 per semester hour and $4,500 per fiscal year.

- Apply through your branch’s portal (Army IgnitED, Air Force Virtual Education Center, Navy College, etc.).

Texas Hazlewood Act
The Hazlewood Act is a Texas state benefit that exempts eligible Texas veterans, active-duty service members, and reservists from paying tuition and certain fees at Texas public colleges and universities for up to 150 credit hours. To qualify, you need a qualifying DD214 with over six months of active-duty service time, not including training (basic training, military job training, National Guard and Reserves drill and training).
What you need to apply:
- Complete the digital Hazlewood Exemption application through Tarleton’s Student Forms website.
- Provide a copy of your DD214, and other labeled documents needed for eligibility in the digital application.
Remember to verify your enrollment monthly for Federal VA benefits.
