Chapter 33: Post 9/11 G.I. Bill®
The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill® helps pay for tuition and fees, provides a monthly housing allowance (BAH), and offers up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies. Veterans who served at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001 may qualify.
What you need to apply:
- Request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA and send a copy to the Veteran’s Services Office.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form each semester to the Veteran Services Office.
Chapter 30: Montgomery G.I. Bill® (MGIB)
The Montgomery G.I. Bill® – Active Duty provides up to 36 months of education benefits. It is available to veterans who served at least two years on active duty and paid into the MGIB program through a $1,200 payroll deduction.
What you need to apply:

- Request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form each semester to the Veteran Services Office.
- Benefits are paid directly to you each month, so you are responsible for paying tuition and fees to the university.
Chapter 31: VR&E
VR&E (Chapter 31) assists veterans with service-connected disabilities in preparing for, finding, and maintaining meaningful employment. Depending on your needs, benefits may include tuition and fees, books and supplies, a monthly housing allowance, and career counseling.
What you need to apply:
- Apply online through VA.gov to determine eligibility.
- Work with a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) who will issue an authorization to the university if approved.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form each semester to the Veteran Services Office.
Texas Hazelwood Act
The Hazlewood Act is a Texas state benefit that exempts qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children from paying tuition and certain fees at Texas public colleges and universities for up to 150 credit hours.
What you need to apply:
- Complete the digital Hazlewood Exemption application available through Tarleton’s Student Forms website.
- Provide documents proving eligibility such as a DD214, birth certificate, proof of Texas residency, etc. as indicated by the application
