Chapter 33: Post 9/11 G.I. Bill®
Eligible service members can transfer unused Post-9/11 G.I. Bill® benefits to a spouse or dependent child. Transferred benefits can help pay for tuition and fees, provide a monthly housing allowance (BAH), and cover books and supplies.
What you need to apply:
- The service member must request a transfer of benefits through the Department of Defense’s milConnect portal.
- Once transferred, dependents should request a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA and send a copy to the Veteran Services Office.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form each semester to the Veteran Services Office.
Chapter 35: Dependents Educational Assistance
DEA provides a monthly stipend to spouses and children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected condition.
What you need to apply:
- Request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA.
- Complete and submit Tarleton’s Request for VA Certification form each semester to the Veteran Services Office.

Texas Hazlewood Act
The Hazlewood Act provides an exemption of up to 150 credit hours of tuition and certain fees at Texas public institutions for eligible dependents and spouses. Through the Hazlewood Legacy Program, veterans may transfer unused hours to a child; spouses may also qualify for an exemption under certain conditions.
What you need to apply:
- Complete the digital Hazlewood Exemption application through Tarleton’s Student Forms website.
Provide supporting documentation such as the veteran’s DD214, proof of Texas residency, and relationship verification (e.g., birth certificate, marriage license).
Remember to verify your enrollment monthly for Federal VA benefits.
