{"id":874,"date":"2022-08-05T14:30:03","date_gmt":"2022-08-05T14:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/waco\/?page_id=874"},"modified":"2025-10-24T21:41:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T21:41:40","slug":"cerp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/waco\/for-students\/cerp\/","title":{"rendered":"VA Center of Excellence Research Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tarleton Undergraduates @ VA Center of Excellence Research Program<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-white-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#4f2d7f\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans is a&nbsp;training program provide to current Tarleton State University undergraduate students with practical research experience in psychology, specifically focused on mental health concerns among post-9\/11 Veterans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color\">Your Future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Former graduates of this program have gone on to graduate study at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baylor University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Columbia University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Arizona<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texas Tech University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kansas State University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Houston<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Denver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eastern Illinois University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other graduates of the program have gone on to positions as research assistants in laboratories to gain further experience as preparation for graduate study, or to clinically focused post-graduation employment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-button alignfull is-style-squared\"><a class=\"wp-block-advgb-button_link advgbbtn-8d036494-cdfb-4a8e-8297-fb9b31f54306\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirecc.va.gov\/visn17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Learn More<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans (CoE) at the Doris Miller VA Medical Center, annually hosts Tarleton State University students for a 2-semester (require minimum) undergraduate research internship designed to aid students with preparation for graduate school or to gain a foundation of work experience as they apply for jobs following graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The internship class begins in the Fall semester and require a 10-hour per week commitment, 8 hours of which is spent gaining hands-on research experience, another hour dedicated to attending didactic trainings, and another hour devoted to reading and writing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current studies at the CoE focus on the assessment, functioning, and treatment of mental health problems in returning war Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators have a particular interest in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the assessment and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>traumatic brain injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>suicide prevention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>substance use disorders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>trajectories of functioning over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will be filmed by doctoral-level researchers and trained in several aspects of research including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>data entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>data management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>screening participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conducting literature searches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assembling research materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>observing diagnostic assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participating in weekly staff meetings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through an educational component, research assistants will learn critical reading and analysis skills in weekly discussion groups on current literature related to COEHD studies.
