Upward Bound is one of several TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  These programs were designed to provide a wide range of academic and cultural enrichment for participants. All Upward Bound projects must provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language.

In our 33 years on the Tarleton campus, we have provided a wide-range of free services that have helped hundreds of high school students within our target schools gain the necessary skills and motivation to pursue a post-secondary education.

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and post-secondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.

Program Components

Upward Bound provides services during the academic year and the summer. During the academic year, meetings are held two Saturdays a month from September through May on the Tarleton campus. Throughout the summer, participants engage in secondary and postsecondary classroom learning and participate in cultural and educational activities. The five-week summer residential program provides invaluable opportunities for students to experience learning in a college environment. Students must participate in both components to maintain eligibility for program services.

Post Graduation Bridge

The Summer Bridge program is offered to those who have graduated from high school and are accepted to a post-secondary education in the fall. Upward Bound will pay for a course for college credit that may be transferred to the college of their choice.

After Joining Upward Bound, I have made many new friends most of which I talk with daily, I am also more social than ever accepting situations in which I would have never been comfortable in before. On top of all of that college has become more of reality than ever.
