It is currently administered by ACT (a nonprofit organization of the same name), and accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the US. The ACT is based on what students are learning, it is not an aptitude or IQ test.

What is on the test:

The ACT test covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. It also offers a 40-minute writing test.

The English test puts a tester in the position of a writer who makes decisions to revise and edit text. The mathematics test assesses the skills testers typically acquire in courses taken through grade 11. Knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills are assumed as background for the problems. The reading test measures how well the student can reason logically about texts using evidence and use information from multiple sources. Questions will ask testers to determine main ideas, locate and interpret significant details, understand sequence of events, etc. The science test assesses the student’s ability to interpret, analyze, evaluate, reason, and solve problems. The content of the test includes biology, chemistry, Earth/space, and physics.

What do you need the test for?

The ACT is a test that colleges and universities use to help determine whether or not students will be accepted into their institution. The baseline score varies by institution, so students should check admissions requirements for the schools of their choice. The ACT also connects students to scholarship opportunities.

Who to Contact for More Information

For more information on the ACT please visit the ACT website.

Helpful Resources

ACT offers lots of resources including online classes, tutoring, and prep guides.
