{"id":5842,"date":"2026-01-15T17:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/tieuc\/?page_id=5842"},"modified":"2026-01-15T17:23:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:23:26","slug":"smoking-and-mental-health-in-nct","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/tieuc\/dashboards\/smoking-and-mental-health-in-nct\/","title":{"rendered":"Smoking and Mental Health in NCT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smoking-and-mental-health-in-nct-aef7298d-cbb0-46ba-a9f4-00cad853a0b2\">Smoking and Mental Health in NCT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This dashboard provides a&nbsp;<strong>county-level snapshot for 24 North Central Texas counties<\/strong>&nbsp;across&nbsp;<strong>2015\u20132024<\/strong>, letting users compare counties by a selected health indicator and year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to read it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Metric (Select):<\/strong>\u00a0switches the entire dashboard between:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adult Smoking<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(percentage)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor mental health days<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(days in the last 30)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mental health providers<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(rate; often stored as a decimal\u2014see note below)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Year filter:<\/strong>\u00a0updates the\u00a0<strong>map, ranking, and distribution<\/strong>\u00a0to the selected year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Map:<\/strong>\u00a0shows county patterns spatially; clicking a county can be used to filter\/highlight the other charts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trend:<\/strong>\u00a0shows how values change over time (use it for direction\u2014up\/down\u2014rather than labeling every line).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>County Ranking:<\/strong>\u00a0ranks counties for the selected year from highest to lowest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong>\u00a0groups counties into value ranges so you can see whether most counties cluster around a \u201ctypical\u201d level or if values are spread out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Units \/ proportions (important)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adult Smoking<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>percent<\/strong>\u00a0(e.g., 18.6% means 18.6 out of 100 adults).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor mental health days<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>days<\/strong>\u00a0(e.g., 5.0 means ~5 poor mental health days in the past 30 days on average).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mental health providers<\/strong>\u00a0is typically a\u00a0<strong>rate<\/strong>, not a percent by definition. If your field is formatted as a percent and shows values like 7.5%, that\u2019s Tableau formatting the decimal (0.075) as a percent.
