PCIT works with the child and caregiver together to improve overall behavior and to reduce parenting stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goals of PCIT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improve the parent\/caregiver-child relationship<\/li><li>Improve children&#8217;s minding and listening skills<\/li><li>Increase children&#8217;s ability to manage frustration and anger<\/li><li>Increase children&#8217;s social skills<\/li><li>Improve children&#8217;s attention skills<\/li><li>Improve parents&#8217; use of appropriate discipline strategies<\/li><li>Help parents set developmentally-appropriate expectations for their child<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deciding if PCIT is appropriate for a family&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PCIT is designed for young children between the ages of 2 and 7 years<\/li><li>PCIT has been successful with:<ul><li>Children with oppositional\/defiant problems<\/li><li>Children with aggressive behaviors<\/li><li>Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)<\/li><li>Children experiencing adjustment problems<\/li><li>Children impacted by substance abuse<\/li><li>Children in foster care<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>PCIT requires a 14-20 week commitment by the parent\/caregiver and child with one or more sessions per week<\/li><li>PCIT is not appropriate for non-custodial caregivers unless they are able to see the child at least three times per week in addition to their weekly PCIT session<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is short-term, specialized behavior management program designed for young children experiencing behavioral and\/ or emotional difficulties and their families.
