Tartan History

Tarleton State University was founded in 1899 and recently celebrated its centennial as founding member of The Texas A&M University System. The home campus is in Stephenville, with centers in Fort Worth, Waco, Midlothian, Bryan and an online Global Campus. The university offers some 100 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs through seven colleges and three schools.

Proud of its tradition, spirit and pride — especially the iconic purple and white — Tarleton has decided the time is right to add a new element to the brand. A tartan. The tartan’s traditional pattern, named Ever Forward, Ever Onward to honor the Tarleton fight song, is a nod to the school’s rich history and vibrant future as it moves closer to becoming the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond. The six lines in the tartan pattern represent the university’s six core values: tradition, integrity, civility, excellence, leadership and service.
